Covenanters were Scottish Presbyterians who, during the 17th century, signed covenants (formal agreements) to protest the Stuart monarchy's interference with the Church of Scotland. These covenants, particularly the National Covenant of 1638 and the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643, represented a significant period in Scottish history and the Covenanters' opposition to royal authority.
